Water basin for tomatoes greenhouses, Poland

The weather conditions in to southern Poland were favourable, so our welding team travelled there to line a basin of enormous dimensions. The basin was a newly dug basin at a tomato growing facility that belongs to a leading tomato producer in Poland with multiple greenhouse locations across the country. They grow tomatoes on a total area exceeding 75 hectares. Their greenhouses at this specific location cover 45 hectares of the highest quality cultivation, of which 39 hectares are illuminated production. They primarily cultivate raspberry tomatoes, along with plum and cherry tomatoes as well as seasonal cucumbers.

During the summers, the facility consistently faced water shortages. While a few water tanks were installed, they couldn’t hold enough water to irrigate the greenhouse tomatoes during the hot and sometimes dry Polish summers. Therefore, a basin in the shape of a triangle was installed, with each side measuring over 200 meters.

We lined the basin with a total of 35,600 m2 of ENPEX FPP 1.00, divided into 15 film sheets that our team welded together on site. But first, the basin was lined with 250 grams of protective felt. This felt protects the film from sharp objects in the ground, such as twigs and stones.

After the film was installed, our team also installed about 800 meters of geotextile as bank protection. Concrete tiles in ballast pockets in the sheets keep the geotextile in place. It protects the film on the embankment from UV light, wind and weeds.

The facility will primarily collect rainwater in the basin. The water will be guided via outlets to their high-end irrigation system and facilitates optimal irrigation of the tomato plants.
